In Mark 6:22 on the basis just three Greek manuscripts ( א, B, and D) the Nestle-Aland/United Bible
Society Greek text (NU) has: “the daughter that was his” which, in context would make the girl who danced for Herod HIS own daughter!
96.5% of the Greek manuscripts, including the best line of transmission (f35) have: “the daughter
that was hers” which only affirms that she was the daughter of Herodias.
Well, which reading is right?
From Roman history, we know that this girl’s name was ‘Salome’ and that she was indeed the daughter of
Herodias. However, her father was Herod’s brother Philip who ruled a neighboring jurisdiction.
By indicating that Salome was Herod’s daughter, the NU Greek text, which is the basis for most modern translations, introduces a historical inaccuracy into the New Testament, undermining one’s confidence in the flawless inspiration and reliable transmission of the New Testament by the Holy Spirit.
